Bloated Barry
By: Vincent Vinas
Rose has heard the stories of Bloated Barry but never really believed them. After all, most of the kids at school who swore by the tales of a dead man rising from the bathtub would forget their brains in the morning if they weren't locked up in their skulls.
Rose brought this to mind when she found herself home alone on Friday night, waiting for her boyfriend, Peter. He was going to be two hours late for their first ever evening alone at her place since her parents would be gone all weekend.
As time slowly ticked by Rose grow more and more restless. And her restlessness soon evolved into an anxious curiosity each time she passed the bathroom. It just couldn't be true. How could a man suddenly appear in your bathtub from out of nowhere? Further more, how could he drown people who see him if he isn't real? This was becoming too intriguing, but Rose tried her best to not give in. The last thing she wanted was for the kids at school to find out she tried to call Bloated Barry. They would laugh her right out of the school for believing such rubbish. Even Peter would think she's silly if she asked him to try it with her. Her curiosity was raging now.
Half an hour later, Rose was standing before her bathtub. She had filled it almost to the top like the boys at school said was necessary to summoning Bloated Barry. Rose cautiously shut off the water, pulled the shower curtain to conceal the tub and took a seat on the closed toilet. With a deep breath she turned off the light, showering herself in darkness. Now all that was left was the chant.
"Bloated Barry, dead and blue--show me what they've done to you."
Rose waited. Nothing. Then she remembered she needed to say it three times. Three times for the three days it took police to find him, she thought to herself.
"Bloated Barry, dead and blue--show me what they've done to you."
At least a minute had passed since the second chant when Rose realized she was sweating. This is ridiculous, she thought. I'll show them this is just nonsense. Finally.
"Bloated Barry, dead and blue--show me what they've done to you."
Rose waited a few seconds, her hand already nervously on the light switch. She couldn't wait anymore and hit the switch, but the light didn't come on. She hit it again-same result. But before Rose could remember where the spare lights might be the sound of rippling water began to fill the room. She looked towards the shower curtain and could easily see the outline of a man sitting in her tub. She heard him moving around even more now.
Rose gripped the doorknob so hard she almost broke it, but it would not budge. Behind her the shower curtain slowly slid open, scraping against the metal pole that held it in place. Rose was now sweating profusely. Don't turn around.
The first soggy step the figure behind her took on the bathroom floor could be heard loud as thunder. Rose's sweat was now being replaced by tears. Don't turn around.
The second soggy step was followed by a third and a low gurgling that ended with the sound of water hitting the floor. Rose could actually feel little drops of water hit her legs. Don't turn around.
Rose tried so hard to rip open the door with no luck that her hands were beginning to bleed. But somehow she couldn't get herself to scream. Not even when a wet, swollen hand latched onto her shoulder, ripping at her shirt. Desperate to escape from whatever was behind her, Rose finally turned around.
A few hours later Peter got some police officers to force their way into Rose's house and they quickly discovered her in the bathroom. She lay naked in the still full tub with her head beneath the water. Her eyes still bulging in fright-her throat crushed shut. Nearby her clothes were scattered on the floor, torn to pieces.
The police never figured out what happened since there was never any evidence of a second person in the house and the case is open until this day. The kids at school though knew then as they do now what happened. Every once in awhile you can hear them repeating the chant to scare new students.
"Bloated Barry, dead and blue--show me what they've done to you." Rose, it seems had found out Barry's fate in the worst way possible.
